MORE DETAIL

What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. Unlike medications or surgical interventions, TMS does not require anaesthesia or sedation, and there are typically fewer side effects. The treatment is generally administered in a clinic, under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional.

Indications for TMS

TMS is commonly used to treat a variety of psychiatric and neurological conditions, such as:

  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Chronic Pain Conditions (e.g., migraine)

It is often recommended for patients who have not responded to traditional treatments like medication or psychotherapy. However, TMS is generally not the first line of treatment and is often considered after exploring other options.

How Does TMS Work?

TMS works by directing a magnetic field to specific regions of the brain. A magnetic coil is placed near your scalp, and magnetic pulses pass through your skull to interact with brain tissue. This stimulation has been shown to impact mood-regulating neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.

Treatment Sessions

We have two treatment options:

  1. The standard protocol: 30 sessions over 30 days for 30 min each
  2. The SAINT protocol: 50 sessions over 5 days for 10-20 min each

The SAINT protocol can be done as an in- or outpatient.

During the treatment, you will sit in a reclining chair, and a coil will be positioned on your head. You may feel a tapping sensation on your scalp and hear clicking sounds during the treatment.

Potential Side Effects

While TMS is generally well-tolerated, there are some potential side affects you should be aware of:

  • Scalp Discomfort: Most commonly, patients report a sensation of tapping or tingling on the scalp during treatment.
  • Headache: Some patients experience headaches immediately following a TMS session, usually mild and short-lived.
  • Light-headedness: A few patients may feel lightheaded after treatment, but this usually subsides quickly.

Rare side effects include seizures and hearing loss if ear protection is not used during treatment.

Who Should Avoid TMS?

  • Individuals with metal implants in or near the head
  • People with a history of epilepsy or seizures
  • Pregnant women, unless approved by a healthcare provider

Payment options:

The Standard as well as the Saint protocols cost around R35 000 currently.
